AI Policy
I am an independent author. A proud ‘Indie’. The following sets out my use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in my creative work.
Prior to the Meroni series, I have produced books under my real name of Tony Flannagan. I spent my formative writing years contributing to a horse racing magazine. Working to a deadline was a fantastic learning experience. As a result, I self-published and trad-published several books on racing. My first foray into fiction followed, resulting in two books for younger readers. Which, I am afraid to say, were ‘vanity’ productions – we live and learn …
All my books are products of my imagination. I do not use AI to produce my stories, including plot, character, and scenes. However, I utilise the following tools to improve the creative process, and reader experience.
Microsoft Word Editor - grammar, spelling, and consistency checks.
ProWritingAid - grammar checker, style editor, and writing mentor.
Canva - an online graphic design tool. Use it to create social media posts, presentations, posters, videos, logos and more.
ElevenLabs - high quality AI voice narration.
ScribeShadow - AI platform for translation into other languages.
There are many ongoing arguments about the use of AI in creative work. The question most often posed is why not use human editors, proofreaders, narrators, and translators? The simple answer is cost. These services do not come cheap. I have used editorial services previously, and whilst I was happy with the results, the costs incurred are prohibitive for a series author, especially an ‘Indie’. In the future, I may employ resources. However, in the meantime I will continue to use premium quality AI tools to enhance and inform my writing.
